Dit château gaat terug tot in de Romeinse tijd. Gelegen op het hoogste van het plateau van Saint-Emilion. Werd lang beschouwd als de beste wijn uit Bordeaux. Tot 2007 stond het estate bekend als Château Belair. Na de overname van het estate door Jean Moueix (een hele bekende wijnhandelaar in Bordeaux) werd de naam veranderd in Belair Monange, in herinnering aan Anne-Adèle Monange, de vrouw van Jean Moueix. In 2012 werd Château Magdelaine, eveneens eigendom van Moueix, aan dit domein toegevoegd en komt deze wijn dus niet meer op de markt.
De wijngaard van deze Saint Emilion Grand Cru omvat 23,5 hectare. Aangeplant met 90 procent merlot, aangevuld met 10% cabernet franc. De wereldberoemde bodem bestaat uit kalksteen met blauwe klei. De kalksteen in de bodem geeft deze wijn frisheid, minealiteit en een enorme verfijndheid. Delicaat met een zeer indrukwekkend bouquet. De blauwe klei zorgt voor lengte en intensiteit.
Robert Parker (92/100): "The 2014 Belair-Monange was a slightly perplexing wine when I tasted it from barrel, so I was intrigued to discover how it would perform now in bottle. It has what you might describe as a "straight-laced" bouquet: very direct and nicely delineated, albeit without the frills and nuances of some of the best Saint Emilion wines this vintage. There is an attractive wilted rose petal aroma that emerges with aeration, but I was seeking more intensity. The palate is better than the aromatics: silky smooth in texture, well-judged acidity, genuine depth and gentle grip in the mouth. There is tangible mineralité here, great focus with a sense of tension and "bite" towards the finish. I was probably being parsimonious with my score in barrel, although that is partly vindicated by the nose that needs to get its act together and match the potential of the palate. Let's see how this develops over the next few years."
